Five for Friday, Edition #24

1) Weather update: It has been cold and rainy all week. Friends, I had to wear real shoes and socks for multiple days this week and I am OVER IT. At work, this is the week (it's always the week after classes end) when they turn off the steam (THE HEAT) for a week to transition to air. I don't know what any of this means except that it means we have NO CONTROL over the temperature in the buildings on campus. We had a big meeting yesterday and on Wednesday an email went out that said something about it being "like an icebox" in there and to "bundle up." Egads. I literally brought my handwarmers with me. AND! Friends, I brought a space heater from home to work.  (We use the space heater in our downstairs bathroom when we shower during the winter.)

2) Day off: I took Wednesday off work because I had 20 hours of leave I had to use by the end of May. You might think I could just sit on the couch and let Zelda put me to sleep while I "read" by book, but this was my to-do list and I still wasn't done with it when I took this photo at 5:55pm. I started the damn day with an 8am appointment for a mammogram, so I couldn't even sleep in. Anyway, I do feel better about a number of my life chores. Things are going to get kind of crazy in the next month or two and I'm pretty pumped that a number of these items are off my list.

3) Two beers and a puppy: Have you heard this thing about two beers and a puppy ? It's basically a test that asks would you have two beers with someone? Would you trust them to watch your puppy for a weekend? Some people are no and no and you probably want to avoid those people. Some people are yes and no and they are fun folks, but not responsible. Some people are no and yes and they're responsible, but not fun. Most people want to be yes and yes, but so very few are. I fear I am a no and yes kind of lady, but I honestly don't know how to make myself more fun.

Anyway, I spent way too long on my Wednesday off contemplating this question and putting people in a 2x2 table in my mind. (Shout to the social scientists reading this! You know we love our 2x2 tables.)

4) Internet tracking: So, everyone knows my favorite hat, right? Well, it's getting a bit ragged and I looked up a replacement for it and the cookies followed me forever and I'm still getting ads for Craft. (No, I haven't purchased a new one. I'll wear this one until it dies.) Also, I firmly believe that the phones are listening to us. My husband has a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis and we very rarely talk about it. It's the easiest of his weird boutique diagnoses to manage. BUT!! Reddit is always giving me ads for treatments for it. STOP LISTENING TO US, PHONES.

5) Working out downstairs: I have been working out downstairs a lot because it's cold upstairs (I REFUSE to turn on the heat during the day) and this means that Hannah as once again taken over my yoga mat. On Wednesday, I treated myself to a long yoga session and by the end of savasana, I had Hannah on one side and Zelda on my chest. I like to mildly complain about it, but you all know I love it, right?

Where are you in the two beers and a puppy table?

I'm definitely a no and yes person. We watch the neighbors dogs, water their gardens, and bring out their garbage when they're on vacation. Rarely been to their house for a social event. But we're good neighbors.
I don't drink alcohol anyways. I'd rather watch a puppy ( or a cat or a baby) than go out to party.

    1. I mean, I don't drink alcohol, either, but presumably we could sit at a restaurant and sip on mocktails, yes? Let's try to be yes and yes people!

  2. I fail the two beers part although I would stay with you while you drank.

    1. Well, I don't drink alcohol, either, so we'd be at Tim Hortons with our coffees!

  3. I disagree that you are not a two beers person - of course I would drink the beers so that you don't have to. I would be down to do a dog swap with you anytime.

We had rain all week here but I craftily escaped most of it by being in California. I don't want to make light of their drought situation, but I was there for 10 days with zero rain. When I got back my plane got in right on time - and then had to sit on the runway for an hour because there was lightning so the ground crew had to stay inside until it cleared up. Last night was #2's high school graduation, and my wardrobe kept changing with the forecast - it went from a sleeveless summer dress to a sleeved dress to a warm dress to pants, cardigan, coat, and gloves.

    1. Birchie, you will be happy to know that the snowpack this year was pretty good (for the 3rd year in a row) so much of California is not in drought, and our reservoirs are pretty healthy, and that it is completely normal to not have any rain for months on end. Likely we won’t get any measurable rain until at least September, but probably it will be October or November.

    2. You're definitely a yes and yes person, Birchie! You can come hang out with Hannah whenever you want.

  4. I"ll watch your puppy, AND drink two beers! Honestly, the two beers sounds more fun, only because puppies are a lot of work. But I would do a good job and your puppy would be safe.
I can't even believe (and I've said this often) that we live in the same country. It's been 95 degrees here and super humid. No space heaters needed!

    1. I am DREAMING of 70 degrees again. DREAMING. *sigh* Oh, well. I just wanted to rush summer too much, obviously.

  5. Your first point reminded me so much of when the community centre I taught yoga at had HVAC problems and no heat. In March. In Calgary. It was absolutely dreadful. They shut it down for a while and then still had problems. I remember one class coming home and just curling up with several layers because I was so cold. Space heaters did next to nothing for the big hall that I taught in.
    Anyway, moving on.
I think I am a yes and maybe person. I would love to say unequivocally I'd watch a puppy, but the reality is a) it depends how Rex would take it and b) I have no fence in my yard so that is tricky. I want to? But I'm not sure? If I didn't have Rex I would, but he's a bit territorial and so...well...you know how it goes. I don't like beer but I am a good person to have a couple of drinks with (I know you don't drink, so I'd have sparkling water with you).

    1. I remember doing a yoga class at our community center during winter and wearing my heated vest to class. It was the only way to be warm.

I mean, let's assume you're watching the puppy at the puppy's house. I don't know exactly what Rex is doing during this time, but maybe he's off living his best doggy frat party self. You're definitely a yes and yes person!

  6. Engie it has been raining and cold here most of the week and I am so grumpy about it. Didn't the weather get the memo that it's almost summer. I wore my big winter coat the other day. A WINTER COAT.

I'm allergic to dogs and borderline afraid of them, so I would be unlikely to volunteer for this position and I don't drink beer. Now, don't I just sound like the least fun person ever?!!!

    1. Elisabeth, I've had to pull out my coat for morning walks, too. I am displeased and a tad bit dispirited. Do you remember how the nice weather changed me into a happy person?

I mean, I'd love to have a cuppa with you, friend. And don't worry - puppies aren't like real dogs - they're just like babies with sharp teeth!

  7. I don't drink beer, so I fail on that question if it's being literal. If I can have a Coke, I'm in, though given that I often have knitting in my hands, I'm sure I would not strike a lot of people as a fun person to drink with. As to the puppy, well, I can take care of cats! I don't really "speak" dog, though, so again, if we're being literal, I'm a no on this as well.

    1. Ha! Well, I'll put you in the two pops and a kitten box, friend!

  8. Hmmm. I think it depends on how well you know the person asking you to two beers. Or to guard the puppy. A friend or acquaintance? Yes to the beers. But only yes to the puppy if I knew the person well enough to trust them with my dog.

    1. Oh, interesting! I do think I'd watch a lot of people's puppies, but I'd only trust a very few people to watch Hannah. Hannah's SO HARD because she's unpredictably reactive and I don't think people realize how reactive she is so much. Puppies are easier in many ways than a full grown dog with all its quirks.

  9. Good job getting so many chores done on your day off from work. Boo to having to put shoes and socks on, you were so adamant that you did not want to!

I’m likely a yes and maybe person. Meaning if I agreed to watch your puppy, of course I am trustworthy and would keep puppy safe and happy. But puppies are a LOT and I am not sure I would volunteer. Adult dog? Yes please. Actually, I would watch a puppy if it could be at the person’s house, I just don’t want to deal with everything here in my house.

    1. You wouldn't volunteer for a puppysit for a weekend? I think I would, but I agree that it would have to be at the puppy's house. Ain't nobody got time to puppy proof my house!

  10. The State of Wisconsin has similar issues with heating and cooling. They turn off the A/C on a certain date (October 1?) and don't turn it back on until May. There have been a couple of times when they've had us shut all the blinds and bring in portable fans because the building was too warm. (That certainly wasn't an issue this week.)

Did you catch that sunrise this morning?!

    1. It gets bad in the fall, too, when they turn on the heat when it's still in the 80s. *sigh* I know why they do it when they do because they can't risk frozen pipes, but there's nothing like students falling asleep in classes because the rooms are so hot!

  14. The real feel temperature right now at our lake house is 38F. I am wearing a sweater, leggings, and a heating pad. There will be no boating this Memorial Day weekend. UGH.

I feel like we could have beers together and talk politics, education, and books, among other things. Just because we have beers doesn't mean we have to be silly. And I would watch your puppy dog at your house but not mine. Not only do I have two huge cats, but I have a very small house and yard. Unless we take your dog to the lake! Then we could do it.

    1. YES!! Let's take Hannah to the lake and have some hot beverages by the lake while we're wrapped up in blankets in front of a fire. That sounds LIKE HEAVEN.

  15. So my thing with the weather right now is that it is cool, in the nice spring way - the rain really took a lot of the humidity out of the air and leave crisp clear spring-almost-summer air. BUT the sun is blazing. So in the shade it feels like a perfect 60 degrees, but in the sun, I feel as if there are lasers cutting into my skin. I don't know if I've just become more sensitive to the suns rays or what, but I can't really stand being in direct sunlight anymore. Or maybe I've turned into a vampire.
I feel like I would want to hang out with you even without a beer. I don't drink myself so I don't quite understand beer as a barometer for fun. Isn't true fun enjoying yourself without being buzzed? I'm probably not the best person to answer this question. But anyhow, I think I'm a beer and puppy person depending on the person. Probably also depending on the puppy.

    1. I fear we must agree to disagree on the sun, friend. All I want is to be able to give my skin the sun it craves. *sigh* I must be patient, I guess.

  17. No and yes, only because I CAN'T have two beers with you unless I force-feed (drink) them to you. Would I drink two beers while you watch me with an expression of faint distaste? Probably not, unless you convinced me you really wanted me too. I would drink two cups of tea with you and I would trust you over myself with Lucy, so we're good.
It's cold and rainy here. I never mind the cold but I'm sick of the rain - I can't remember the last day with no rain.

  19. If I can change the beers to ciders or margaritas, then I'm in! I just don't like the taste of beer, but I'll do other alcoholic bevvies. And OF COURSE I'll watch your puppy! I love puppies!

  20. I ave no issue drinking to beer – I would prefer non-alcoholic. But I am a definite NO on the second. Being scared of dogs doesn't make me irresponsible. Just saying ;-).

The phones definitely listen to us. And I do not believe we will ever go back.
