CBBC: The Vote Is In

The vote is in, friends. We will be reading I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith for our next Cool Bloggers Book Club! Thanks to everyone who voted.

I imagine most of you will get an ebook or a copy from the library, but there are free online options that are available (at least in the United States). There's a pretty good scan on Archive that I would recommend.

Here's the schedule as I see it for now:

August 5: Chapters 1-6
August 12: Chapters 7-10
August 19: Chapters 11-14
August 26: Chapters 15-16
September 2: Wrap-up

That's roughly 60-70 pages a week, which seems like it's fast enough for us to get momentum every week, but it will really only take us a month to read the whole book.

Who's on board?

  1. Just placed a library hold. Also-- did you see the NYT best books of the 21st century list crowned MY BRILLIANT FRIEND number 1?!

    1. My library got it to me within 24 hours! I guess there's not a huge demand for it. LOL.

  2. Hells yeah, you know I'm in!

I lolled at the NYT list. Not counting DNFs, I've read a whopping three (3) of them and of those I only liked one (1).

    1. Oh, I didn't think it was a bad list, to be honest. I guess I'm in in the minority on that.

    1. Yes! I'm excited that you're excited.

  4. Me! Already have it, woo hoo. Also, I'm with Birchie. I read the NYT list and thought, huh? However, I was clearly not the type of reader they were focusing on. Let's just say my reading history and their top 100 list did not align much...

    1. You and me both, Anne! And, here I thought I was a well-rounded reader... haha!

    2. I mean I don't think it's a particularly well-rounded list.

    3. We're not even a quarter of the way into the century - maybe the list will get better over time?

    1. Yes! We'll read and determine if this is a good book or if I'm misremembering.

  6. I'm in! So, to make sure I'm understanding, we're aiming to read the first chapters _by_ Aug 5, right?

    1. Yes! I'll put up a post about the first chapters on August 5, so ideally you would have read them by then. Obviously, people can chime in after the day I post about chapters, too, but those are the dates I'm planning on posting about those particular chapters.

  7. Yay oh man. I have a lot of other books half finished right now - I'm going to have to push through those so I can start ICTC!

    1. Tell me about it. I have all these books lying around and I definitely need to get those out of the way so I can concentrate on ICTC.

    1. My library sent me an email that it was ready for pickup within 24 hours. I guess there's not a huge demand for a 75-year-old book?

  9. I'm in! I will miss the first week though since I'll be on a blog break and travelling, but I'll be there later!

  14. Ugh. I didn't even think about the timing. I am full-on with events almost all of August and will have to gracefully bow out of CBBC this time. I will enjoy the experience vicariously, though, and this book sounds fascinating!

  16. Hooray! This will hopefully be a good one. I've been wanting to read this book. I may do the audiobook this time - I'll have to see if it's available on Spotify.

    1. Oooohhh...I'm going to see if my library has it on audio. I have the physical book checked out, but sometimes I want to read when I'm on the go.

  17. I'm so happy! And so certain that I will once again be keen and on the ball early on and lose control of everything and be organized and panicky by chapter 11! Or maybe not! Maybe this will be my time to shine! Ha ha ha ha, no.

    1. This is your time to shine and stay on top of it!! Or not and that will be just fine, too.

  18. I hope you don't mind if I say that I will "try again"... I just can't promise to keep up with the schedule, but I am always willing to give it another go!

  20. *crying emoji* times 100... How did i miss the cool bloggers book club? How? I haven't read blog posts recently. That is how. Apparently since July. Sigh. I is almost too late to join. I immediately requested the book in the library but its a 4 week wait. I am unconsolable.
