For months now I've had a note that somebody asked me about my yoga setup at home. I don't remember who asked and if it was you, I'm sorry that I'm not organized enough to keep track of such things, but I appreciate the topic suggestion/question.
At home I have a yoga mat, two blocks, a blanket, a bolster, and a necktie I use as a strap that my husband will no longer use because it has a stain on it that's invisible to everyone on the planet but him. I also ALWAYS light a candle when I'm doing yoga. Yes, even when it's ninety degrees and seventy percent humidity.
All of it gets put away in a plastic egg crate and is tucked under a table in our music/sewing/workout room when I'm done with it.
I've been known to grab pillows and blankets off of beds if I need more padding and/or elevation. What can I say? I'm a high-maintenance kind of yoga girl.

At school I have a mat, two blocks, an actual yoga strap, and a blanket (no bolster). I actually have THREE mats because I like to have extra in case someone comes to the yoga program I put on without a mat of their own.

How many yoga mats do you own? Do you have all the yoga gear or are you strictly a mat kind of person?

I don't do a lot of yoga (usually only if I need a "yoga for stiff neck" kind of specialized routine), but I have three or four yoga mats! The cushier, the better. One of them is more of an exercise mat, I guess, and it's pretty enormous. I stack my Gaiam mat on top of it for floor work.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I don't like cushy mats very much because they make me feel less grounded. But I do regularly need the blanket under my knees because my left knee has a screaming nerve thing happening. That's where there are a lot of different types of yoga mats.
DeleteYoga tends to floor me. Yes, I know what I said. 🤓
ReplyDeleteIf I take even a few days off, it's exhausting! Yoga is real work.
DeleteI have three yoga mats, and my husband has one, so we are well-equipped with mats. I also use a cover on all my mats for easy cleaning and to keep hands and feet from slipping. I have blocks and bolsters and all the things, but unless I'm doing a restorative practice (weekends) I just use mat (with cover! Important to me) one cork block, and my eye pillow for savasana.
ReplyDeleteI have a confession to make, Nicole. Unless I take my mat outside for a practice, I don't clean it. It's just me! And my own sweat! *shrug* I am not generally sweating profusely (I am so cold so much of the time) that it never occurs to me to wipe it down.
DeleteI have a few different mats, one block, and a carrying bag. That's it! I need to up my game a bit.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't miss it, you don't need to up your game. I'm just...a lot with my yoga.
DeleteMy yoga practice is in my living room, which is carpeted. In addition to the carpet, we have an area rug. So I don’t use a mat at all. I hate how much I slip on a yoga mat, and I had no idea that you could buy a cover for it. If I ever feel the need to do yoga on a mat again, perhaps I will invest in a cover. Having said that, I do own 1 mat, which I used when I used to take an in-person yoga class. I have 2 blocks, a blanket, and a cushion for sitting. When I need a strap, I use a dish towel.
ReplyDeleteI’m intrigued by the thick yoga mats that Adriene uses, and I never see her slip, though I guess they’re would edit that out. I got mine so long ago I have no idea where I bought it. Target maybe? It’s over 20 years old. Who knows if it’s any good anymore, actually. Do they decompose?
I used to do yoga downstairs and it was nice to have my mat over the carpet. I don't have a problem with slipping at all with my yoga mat, though. I definitely slip more on the carpet, so I would put my mat over the carpet. *shrug* We're all different! And the mats are different. I did have slipping problems when I had those nubbly mats that I bought really cheap, but once I got my Manduka mats, the slipping is rarely a problem.
DeleteI have exactly one yoga mat...I don't do yoga.
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess if you don't do yoga, you don't even need the one you have!
DeleteHow fun! I love seeing your setup and reading about everyone else's. I have one very old yoga mat, and it's just the right amount of soft without being too soft. I have two blocks and one bolster. I use a beautiful scarf that was a gift as my strap. It makes yoga feel like a special occasion!
ReplyDeleteYes, the scarf is your equivalent of the burning candle. It IS a special time if you have a special treat to go along with it.
DeleteI own two yoga mats - one that is thin and folds up because I thought it would be good for travel but really isn't, and one that I liberated from an opera company where I was working ten years ago, but should really be replaced because the stickiness has gone out of it. I do wonder how often one is supposed to replace yoga mats....
ReplyDeleteI have no blocks or any other fun yoga toys. I would kind of like a bolster so I can to that version of savasana where you lie back on the bolster and it really opens up your shoulders. But bolsters take up a lot of room.
I have a thin one that folds up (it's one of the three at work) and I DO use it when I travel. It takes up so much less room than a regular yoga mat.
DeleteI don't know if my bolster takes up any more room than a pillow. I can always find room for another pillow, you know?
