Five for Friday, Edition #42

1) Eye masks - In February, we had a Costco adventure with my BIL and SIL in Iowa. They'd never been before, so we used our membership to get them in. (That's a big Costco flex.)

ANYWAY. My SIL and I egg each other on and we decided we really needed the 24-pack of Grace and Stella eye masks. We then split the eye masks and that's what I was using on Monday. They're very soothing and cooling, but do they do anything else? I don't really think so.

2) Pedicure - Do you know how long I've been trying to get a pedicure? It's going to be actual sandal weather and my toes are bare. I don't know. Maybe I can fit it in tomorrow? Or maybe it will be another week and I'll still have bare toes. Anyone have their first pedicure of the season yet? I'm thinking green for the color.

3) Canvas outage - This probably doesn't impact many of you, but our campus is one of the campuses hit by the Canvas cyber attack. Finals are next week, yo.

Honestly, I'm mixed on this. On one hand, this is almost like white hat hacking, you know? Down with capitalism! On the other hand, this really does punish the students who are working hard and earning their grades. Also, I'm mildly inconvenienced, although I suspect many, many of my co-workers are much more than mildly inconvenienced.

4) Co-worker leaving -  A while back we were hiring an advisor position in our office. We interviewed a woman who would have been great, but we hired someone else because of reasons and that has really worked out for us. We suggested this woman apply for a different job on campus, which she got. Yay! She sort of hated that job, though. I met with her regularly (I try to make adult friends, I swear) and we had lunch and hung out and I tried to answer her questions about campus and introduce her to people. When we had an opening in our office late last year, I suggested she apply. She did, but once again she came in second and we didn't hire her.

To no one's surprise, she's leaving. Today's her last day. I am bringing her a small gift and homemade cookies and if I hadn't been on both of those hiring committees, I would happily give her some tips. *sigh* Off another potential friend goes. (Yes, we could be friends outside of work, but we hadn't made that leap yet and I'm 95% sure we won't now.)

5) Hair cut - I got a hair cut yesterday. It's maaaaybe a bit shorter than I wanted, but who the hell even cares anymore. I'm ready to buzz it off. Should I buzz it off? Probably not, huh? I mean, it looks FINE. But if I was going to go SHORT, I would have gone up even higher, you know?

Also, note that I'm wearing my heated vest under a down jacket. YOU GUYS. IT'S STILL FUCKING COLD HERE. I guess that's fine. I don't have time for a pedicure.

Do you have any big plans this weekend? When's the last time you did an eye mask?

  1. I think your hair looks great and again, love the nose ring!
Too bad about the potential work friend, that must be kind of disheartening for her too.
I get pedicures year-round! I get the gel kind because I can put on socks and boots right away, in the winter months. I used to do my own but you know what, it's just nice to have a little treat to look forward to.

  2. Yes, I guess you can hold off on the pedicure for a bit longer. See how it all works out? I think your hair looks good, and I recommend NOT buzzing it off. : )
Okay, I need an eye mask that will take away the wrinkles and dark circles (those exist, right???) so I will not get this kind.

  4. I think your hair looks terrific. Don't you wish it were permissible in our culture for women to shave their heads and draw fun things on them with Sharpies? It would be so much less upkeep and drama if we didn't worry so much about our hair.

    Maybe that's just me.

No pedicures for me. I cannot stand anyone touching my feet, even myself. I wish people didn't have feet, to be honest; I find them gross. Except baby/toddler feet. Those are too cute.

  5. I was just bemoaning the fact that we are still using our heat in my comment on Julie's blog. It is May. STAHP. But next weekend we will potentially warm to 75 and I am so happy to see that because we have an outdoor paella party to attend on Saturday. Last year it was unseasonably cold and I should have worn a parka. By the time we left I was literally shaking with cold. We are also hosting a bbq for Phil's extended family so I need nice weather so we can be outside for that. Our house is not built to entertain large groups outdoors.

We don't have much planned for the weekend. Tomorrow we are going to a friend's house for a game night which I am pumped for! Sunday is Mother's Day which I honestly could do without. I feel like the holiday brings on more sadness than joy since it can be hard for those who lost a mom or have a fractured relationship with their mom. Phil will get some hanging baskets. All I want is a pb cup blizzard and I'll be happy.

  6. I attended a fundraiser last night for my husband’s work, so I used both an eye patch and a face mask yesterday. They felt great, but who knows whether they do anything. I generally do not do either, but once in a while I am motivated. I’m tempted to buy some instead of pilfering from my daughter, but am torn because who knows whether they do anything, right? SIGH.

I had a pedicure back in March, which was far too early, and now my toes are bare again. I will not get another pedicure, probably, all summer, but I will paint them myself. Perhaps today? It will be sandal weather here on Monday…the rest of the week I think it could go either way. UGH on wearing a heated vest and a puffy jacket in MAY. I feel for you.

Your hair looks great, and Nance cracked me up with her idea of sharpies on our pates. I mean, come on, that could be really cool (or really weird). I think I would need someone to make a very intricate and cool pattern. Or maybe flowers and vines.

Ugh on your coworker almost friend. That’s sad, and how frustrating to apply for two jobs that you want and not get either of them, and just get a job you hate. That’s kind of where my daughter is right now, actually. SIGH.

  7. They say this morning's Frost Advisory will (hopefully) be the last one until autumn. Here's hoping; Tara's got a garden to plant!
