Groceries ($870.33, 28.1%) - This was a lot considering there are only two of us, but it did include a trip to Costco, me stocking up on snacks for my office, and me getting road trip snacks for a couple of road trips. I always splurge and get Perrier grapefruit-flavored sparkling water for these trips, even though the price is outrageous. The place I used to get popcorn from on my road trips closed the convenient location, so I don't even stop for popcorn anymore.
Travel ($753.36, 24.3%) - I bought a plane ticket for an adventure in July!
Gifts ($463, 14.9%) - May is brutal for gifts. There was a graduation gift, birthdays for a few niblings, and Dr. BB's birthday.
Bills ($275.22, 8.9%) - Water/sewer, insurance, and I had to buy new checks.
Cars ($211, 6.8%) - Lots of gas for road trips AND I had to pay for the license plate renewal for one of the cars.
Savings ($200, 6.5%) - Just the regular.
Eating out ($144, 4.6%) - I treated myself to lunch out once on a road trip, coffee once, and I took my family out to dinner when I was in Michigan.
Pets ($69.52, 2.2%) - What?!?! Under one hundred dollars?! What nonsense is this? The only things I bought for the girls all month was food for the cat and a cone of shame for Hannah. (If anyone is wondering, Hannah's scab fell off on our walk on Saturday afternoon after she rolled around in the grass like a lunatic. It is currently bald there. I wonder if she's just going to have a bald patch there forever?)
Personal care ($63.40, 2%) - Hair cut!
Entertainment ($10, < 1%) - I paid for parking in Madison when Dr. BB and I had an adventure downtown.

What's your favorite road trip snack?
PLANE TICKET??????? I'm very excited to hear more!!!!!! Congrats!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to fly TWO times in July. Two times! Can you even imagine? I haven't been on a plan since February 2020!
DeleteOooooh where are you going? I'm so excited to hear about it!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing a very brief road trip...next week, I guess. Well, the drive is long but the stay is short. We are going to my parents' and it's a ten hour drive, we are going to be there for three nights and then driving all the way home again. I guess I should very seriously consider my road trip snack situation!
When I go to Michigan, it's eight hours in the car and I rarely spend more than 2 days there. It makes for a lot of car time. That's why I like to have delicious flavored water as a snack because I don't feel too badly about drinking a ton of it.
DeleteThe price of a plane ticket makes me gasp, but I also know that's the way it is. You going somewhere fun, I hope.
ReplyDeleteRoad trip snacks? Cheez-Its and raw unsalted almonds. Maybe a banana too. 😋
Cheez-Its!! Yes!! I sometimes get Cheez-Its or Chex Mix and it's the only time I let myself have it.
DeleteOoh, an adventure in July!!! I want to hear more about this!
ReplyDeleteMy problem with road trips and eating is, I eat because I'm bored and then feel ill (because obviously I'm eating fun things like chips). Actually I do that with all travel. Somehow I sit down on an airplane and I voice in my head says "time to eat!" Having said that... popcorn is one of my favorite snacks.
I'm with you. I start traveling and my body wants all the junk. LOL. It's not like my body wants me to nibble on carrots, which would be fine, right?
DeleteI think you have to spill about your July adventure.
ReplyDeleteAnd hooray for such a teeny piece of pie for Pet Expenses! That means good things for Hannah and Zelda as well as your wallet.
I don't usually eat on road trips. I drink a lot of water, but don't often eat. If I do, I like to eat small, portable fruit like red seedless grapes or maybe an apple (preferable Granny Smith or Honeycrisp).
Maybe PopCorners--the kettle corn flavour--if it's a long road trip, but I have to be careful and not go crazy.
Wow, Nance. You and I are not on the same road trip snack page. Do you let other people snack on your road trips?
DeleteHaha my husband doesn't let us eat in the car, period. Tap water in plastic bottles only. Luckily we don't do many road trips, but hunger can be an issue!
DeleteUgh. No one "lets me" do anything in the car I help pay for! I would fight back on this!
DeleteOoooh! A July adventure!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have spent so much on the kitten. So. Much. Pet expenses are no joke, huh? And we haven't really even scratched the surface of the vet costs! He's only been once and he didn't need any shots or anything!
Road trip snacks. Hmmm. I would probably vote for a bag of potato chips and a Mountain Dew. Although those things appeal to me less and less as I age.
Well, early pet expenses do add up because there are so many expenses for things that you won't regularly have to buy again like food dishes, litter boxes, and those initial toys. Get pet insurance now! That's my advice. I have deep regrets about not getting it for Hannah before she got sick.
DeleteHooray for the pets! I'm glad that Hannah no longer needs the cone of shame. I love to pack a sandwich for a road trip. It must be on a nice roll, croissant, or French bread and full of sliced turkey and cheese. I'll buy a Milky Way at a gas station along the way. Sometimes a pop, but most often water. Now I want to go on a road trip!
ReplyDeleteHa! I almost never want to go on a road trip, you know? I just have to, so I make it fun with snacks.
DeleteI don't have a go-to snack in the car. I'd probably pick beef jerky, though. It's filling and doesn't make a mess!
ReplyDeleteWow. Beef jerky just makes me thirsty! I don't feel satisfied after it, either. That's a shocking road trip snack to me.
DeleteGotta go with beef jerky on a road trip, washed down with Gatorade Zero.
ReplyDeleteOops, beef jerky/Gatorade Zero was me. Didn't realize I'd been logged out!
ReplyDeleteI have Gatorade Zero packets on road trips, too! I mean, I bring the Perrier, but they are tiny bottles and I only have enough for 2-3 a day.
DeleteI am as surprised as you are for how low maintenace the pets have been this month. After all the spendings I guess it feels like a breezer.
ReplyDeleteRoad trips are more fun with fancy snacks.
AlsoI wanna know where that plane ticket is going at. I can not wait for July to find out.
Well, no worries. I bought Hannah some food this month, so I've already spent more on the pets today than I did the entire month last month.
DeleteMy biggest atypical expense in May was all the checks I wrote for graduation gifts. We got invited to SO MANY this year!
ReplyDeleteSo I have to say that I loathe road trips and the max distance I can handle in the car is about 4 hours. So I typically do not eat in our car since our trips are typically the 3 hour drive to my parents. I try not to eat so my children do not eat and then that limits the crumbs situation! But if I had to pick something, I'd say popcorn!
Well, I hate road trips, too, and I end up stopping a lot. But I can't justify the cost of plane tickets/rental cars for places that are within driving distance. Let's say I wanted to fly to my mom's house. The nearest airport from my house is 45 minutes away (75 minutes to Milwaukee - the nearest "major" airport) and the nearest airport to her house is probably 90 minutes. It's not ideal. *sigh* So I spend a lot of time in the car.
DeleteMy fav road trip snack is whatever can help me stay awake. That was red licorice until my sister was diagnosed with celiac and she told me I wasn’t supposed to be eating licorice. Boo hiss.
ReplyDeleteYeah, licorice is off the list for my husband. It's a sad story.
DeleteA plane ticket! Engie! That's so exciting! I hope you'll share more at some point. <3
ReplyDeleteRoad trip snacks. The only way I can survive a road trip! I love Peanut M&Ms and an ice-cold Dr. Pepper. I want zero healthy things on a road trip!
I am flying TWICE next month. TWICE. What a month.
DeletePeanut M&Ms are dangerous! I love them so much.
Yay for spending less than $100 on pets! My big purchase this month was a new pair of running shoes. Normally at home I have an alert on Amazon and I buy them when they are on sale, but currently I just have to suck it up and buy them when I need them, so they were not cheap!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite road trip snack is a huge iced tea, which I refill at Pilot over and over if I am on a really long trip. I also like pistachios, but I try not to snack too much in the car as it is really easy to just keep cramming them in, over and over, and before you know it the whole bag is gone.
Ha! Pistachios are addictive. That's how I feel about chip type things. I have no control, so I generally don't buy them for in the house and regular use, but on a road trip, I definitely let myself splurge on the salty goodness.
DeleteWe just did a road trip, and I packed our new favourite thing, which is Sweet Potato Poppables. It is fortunate that I don't love eating in the car, because holy crap they are hard to stop eating.
