Photo Every Hour 12/15/2025

I missed some hours here and there. I think you'll all forgive me.

5:31am - Alarm went off. I turned it off and grabbed my Kindle. Today is the big day. I finished Moby-Dick! You may or may not know this, but I have been reading it since September and I was bound and determined to finish it by the end of the year! I did it!

6:21am - It was seven degrees out (roughly -14 for you Celsius people), so Hannah had to wear her coat and boots for our morning walk. She was very unhappy about this.

7:01am - I just finished breakfast. This is where Hannah is about 90% of the time when I'm eating.

8:01am - Am I supposed to be at work by 8? Yes, yes, I am. Are we just now leaving the house at 8? Yes, yes, we are.

9:07am - The leftover cookies from last week's Cookies & Cocoa event are still in the kitchen!

10:51am - Tough student meeting. I needed to use all the tools.

11:54am - Walking to yoga. It is so cold.

12:02pm - Yoga! The lady who runs yoga is retiring, which is great for her, but it means she's only going to be around for one more session.

1:05pm - My husband brought me extra tea. He stayed home this morning and only came in after lunch, so he brought me extra tea. I have a very mild cold and I have been drinking lots of tea in an effort to not feel terrible.

(I accidentally forgot during the 2 o'clock hour. I was in a meeting with a co-worker doing a training. Very boring.)

3:27pm - I left work at 3 because we had to important things, including stopping at my eye place to pick up my contacts.

(During the 4 o'clock hour, we were at the Subaru dealership doing something boring with our new car. I failed to take a photo.)

5:50pm - After the car thing, we went to the grocery store and I accidentally left my phone in the car. *sigh* Here we are getting ready to unpack groceries.

6:03pm - Zelda got fed. She's been very vocal about wanting food and then not finishing her food. This happened again. We don't know if this is something to be concerned about or not. Should I call the vet? Who even knows?

7:46pm - Because I had to wash my hair, I took my shower early. This was my after shower product extravaganza.

8:03pm - Wandered into the living. Dr. BB and I are going to watch an episode or two of Murderbot. Zelda wants cuddles. Who am I to deny her?

9:03pm - Guess who's still on my lap? Guess who's jealous about it?

9:39pm - One last photo before I went to bed. We did our advent jigsaw puzzle!

Do you have an advent calendar? When's the last time a cat cuddled on your lap?

The last time cat cuddled with me was 45 minutes ago. My Iris slept on my legs ( I'm her heat source on cold nights), so I woke up and patted and snuggled her.
No Advent calendar this year. My sister usually sends a box with a small wrapped present for each day for my kids, but this year she was traveling and instead sent 4 small bags for each week of Advent.. She spoils us. The Advent puzzle would be fun to try-maybe next year.
    Great pictures!

    1. Yay for kitty cuddles!! I don't know what I'd do during the winter if I didn't get my evening cuddles with Zelda. Cats really are made for winter.

  2. A day that starts by finishing a book about a big whale is...a day.

I was always terrible at getting to work on time. In my defense, the day always tended to run over due to events that were beyond my control so there was no point in starting early/on time.

I laughed at the picture of the groceries on the floor, since that is something that I cannot do in our house. You-know-who would be into them in a flash.

I don't remember the last time that I had a cat in my lap, but recently there was a morning when I was very late to my workout because Doggo wanted to snuggle on the couch. Now that she's bigger she usually won't get in my lap, but she likes to curl up beside me and gets very put out if I have to move.

    1. Hannah and Zelda have no use for our groceries since we don't buy meat. LOL. Zelda will occasionally nose around, but they know they're not getting anything.

Hannah rarely wants to be next to me, but when she does, I am not going anywhere until she says it's okay for me to move!

  3. That's a very cosy end to the day! Sorry about your sad student. Those meetings must be very hard!

    1. It's very hard right now. We're dealing with students who have been academically dismissed and strategies for what to do now. There are ways for them to apply for reinstatement, but it is not a guarantee. On one hand, for many this is the first time they're facing consequences for poor academic performance and it's a good learning lesson. On the other hand, a lot of our students have serious shit happening in their lives and school cannot be their top priority, so it's I don't know if the consequence is the right one. They can be very hard conversations.

  4. Did you like Moby Dick? I read it years ago, when I used to read (and love) lots of classics. I didn't like it! I think I'm too sensitive towards any kind of cruelty to animals- the hunting of the whale really bothered me.
Your mention of Zelda and food gave me a ping of anxiety. After what we went through with Muffin in September (when she refused to eat) and then Charlotte, I want all cats to be fat! Zelda looks fluffy and healthy to me, and she's obviously happy.
The whole time I was reading your post I was imagining how cold I would be. Freezing cold waking up... cold at work... cold doing yoga... cold while grocery shopping... that's what my winters were like up there. Hopefully you have some good heating so you can at least be warm indoors.

    1. Don't worry, there's going to be SO MUCH about Moby-Dick. SO MUCH.

Yeah, we're monitoring Zelda's weight carefully. I think (imagine a very heavy sigh here) that the thickening of her intestinal walls has made is that she fills up very quickly. She gets super hungry, but is full after just a few bites. She then gets hungry again and comes back for a few more bites, etc. I know this is just going to get worse, but we can maybe up her steroid dose to increase appetite if she's losing weight. Anyway, I didn't mean to give you anxiety, but it is a genuine worry over here, too.

It was SUPER warm in the yoga room. I am plenty warm inside!

  5. Firstly, I just want to say that you have the kitchen cabinets that I want at the lakehouse. I love every single thing about them. The white! The flat fronts! The hardware! I WANT IT ALL.

And! I love the area where your tree is. What a lovely gift to the neighbourhood to see your tree there. And what a great architectural feature of your home.

Is there anything more boring than a trip to the dealership with a car? There is literally nothing to do there. I mean, why look at other cars? You already have The One. Thank goodness for phone apps. It's too bad you can't take Zelda along for cuddles.

Speaking of Zelda, Piper goes through the whole "Hey, it's time to eat, let's go, chop chop!" and then merely takes a nibble and isn't interested. He's a slave to routine, mainly. I realize that because of Zelda's medical history that you have an overarching concern there, but it could just be a phase.

    1. Ha! I love the way our cabinets look if you don't look too carefully. They are very dirty, particularly high touch areas near knobs. However, it's hard to clean them because it peels the paint off.

When we first toured our house, the very first thing I said when I walked into the room was "and this is where the Christmas tree would go!" and my husband glared at me because it was clear I was already decorating the house and he wanted to be more stoic in front of the realtors. It's really the perfect spot.

  6. We don't do any advent calendars--I think since we celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah it feels like a full enough time of year. I do love seeing all the different options for advent calendars! The puzzle ones look super fun, and the bookish ones always are tempting. The last time a cat cuddled me was about forty-five minutes ago when I woke up for the day--he's been sleeping right next to me.

    1. I am here for other people who want their cats to sleep on/with them! That's the whole purpose of the cat, as far as I'm concerned.

  7. Your tree looks fantastic in the window like that. And it's nice to know I'm not the only one who puts grocery bags on the kitchen floor sometimes (depends on the available counter space).

What did you think of "Moby Dick"? To this day, that is one of the most challenging books I've ever read.

    1. We always put them on the floor because they are contaminated with outside germs. If we put them on the counter, we'd have to sanitize the counter. I didn't realize other people put groceries on the counter!

There will be more about Moby-Dick to come!

  8. Who can tell about cats, but I am a little jealous of the cuddles.

    1. Thanks! It's mostly Zelda who takes advantage of the rocking chair.

  10. What a way to end the day! Kitty snuggles and festive puzzles!!
Colour me impressed that you 1) Read Moby Dick and 2) That I had no idea you were reading Moby Dick. I've never read it but I am very curious to hear what you thought.
(And I love the vignette of your tree and the rocking chair, as Kari has just mentioned!)

    1. I have a lot to say about Moby-Dick, but I'm not sure if I know exactly how I feel about it. I do feel very accomplished to have read it.

The front room of our house is pretty great right now. It's much more functional in the middle of the summer, but for now it's a festive celebration.

Wow, that's a long day by my standards, I usually get up at 7:45 (tho usually wake around 5am for the loo). At least you ended your day with cat cuddles.

    1. Ha. I have to be at work by 8 and have to walk the dog and everything before I leave the house. I usually don't get to bed until after 10, either, so this day ended pretty early for me. I would love to get up at 7:45, but that's not meant to be!

  13. That alarm went off in the middle of the night . . . OK, not exactly. I am not an early riser unless I have to be and today I woke up around 4:45 and it felt like the middle of the night. I didn't go back to sleep and I stayed up late last night. Urgh.

I do not have an advent calendar. I seem to recall having one when I was a small child. A cat has not sat on my lap in a very very long time - I am allergic and it would not be a good thing if a cat wandered onto my lap.

The photo with your Christmas tree in the background looks like a postcard. So cozy.

Hi this is Daria from NJ.
We *had* advent calendars back in 2023 and ended up with 24 matchbox cars and 24 little jewelry baubles. The only calendar I would consider getting is the one that had food.
I bought myself a puzzle- very similar to yours- and will do it during that week between Christmas and new years. Can’t wait.

  15. Your Christmas tree setting could be on a Christmas card! How gorgeous! It was fun to see your kitchen. Why yes, I do have an Advent calendar thanks to you! 😊
