Holiday Card Display

This is what my holiday card display looked like last year before I took it down.

We just have some braided ribbon hanging there and the only way we have them staying in place is with a couple of Command hooks on the corners of the doorway.

The ribbon is knotted together three or four times and there are knots on both ends.

What it looks like before any cards are added to it.

We add the cards with tiny clothespins!

And that's it.

How do you display your cards?

  1. Love it! We tape the cards to our kitchen cupboards so that we get holiday cheer when we're in the kitchen.

    1. Does the tape damage the cabinets? Or do you use a special tape?

  2. I don't have a great system. Right now, I just lean them up on a shelf in our dining room. I'm jealous of yours. I'm trying to think where I could recreate something like that?
Years ago I did what Birchie mentions; I used tape to put them up on our cupboard doors and that was fun!
And I remember reading about someone who had a card tree (artificial). It was in her dining room and she put all the cards on the tree as the ornaments. I've never done it, but thought it was a fun idea!

    1. We have a card tree, but I actually put ornaments on it. Ha! It's not big enough for all the cards we get.

  3. I love your system! I need to try something like that next year. I tape up a strip of wide ribbons on a wall in our kitchen and then tape the cards to it. I didn’t last year because the year before Will kept pulling on it when he looked at cards and it fell down. He doesn’t mess with things as much these days so I am trying it again!

    1. Surely he'll leave them alone this year? (Ha ha ha! This shows how much I know about children.)

  4. I love it- the ribbons are pretty. You get a LOT of cards! My card display is on a wall of our living room. I also use command hooks to put up a strand of white lights, then I clip the cards to it with little Christmas-y clothespins.

    1. Ooohhh...I love the idea of adding a strand of lights to it. Maybe I'll run it by my husband.

  5. Oooh I love that display! My cards are on any flat surface I can find - coffee table, countertop, piano, end table. The result is less cohesive but still joyful!

    1. Then you're reminded of the holiday spirit wherever you are in your house!

  6. We are team tape on the cupboard here, but we have one big side of a cupboard that we use. There is generally at least one card that falls over and over again, no matter how much tape we use.

    1. You can't even say that there's a dog or cat that's pulling them down. Must be a ghost!

  7. We may or may not get a card or two.

    1. We already have five. I think it's crazy when people send them out so early, but they do.

As kids, in a family of eight, we use to do this because we got so many cards at Christmas, the house looked like a card factory.

  9. We have a giant stocking with card pockets in it - I impulse-bought it at Loblaws years ago and it is possibly one of the best impulse Christmas decoration purchases ever.

  10. I generally just stand them on the mantel; and then promptly forget about them once Christmas is over. In fact, I just realized, last year's cards are STILL on the mantel.

    1. Once I take down the cards, I pile them up on the desk in our living room and generally don't get around to actually throwing them out until March. Ha!

  11. I love this!!!!!! So pretty!

I use sticky putty to adhere our holiday cards to the wall. Every year, my husband worries that the sticky putty won't come off, and every year I assure him it will, and every year I make damn sure it comes off the wall. Sometimes it is more difficult than other times.

    1. That is my big fear about using tape or putty. What if it doesn't come off nicely?!?!

  12. You get so many Christmas cards - how lovely! In my old place, I would tape my cards on the back of my front door since it was very visible. This year, I'm taping them on a wall next to my kitchen!

  13. We have a fancy festive gold display thing but usually just tape them to the closet door. It's easier to see/read them that way.

    1. There are a lot of people who tape them up. I had no idea that was such a popular display method.

  14. I love that you have a doorway where you can display your cards! I’ll be taping them to the closet door, I think, like I did in our previous apartment. I don’t have a lot of other room, though I could maybe hang them up over the patio door similar to your setup. I need to think about it.

    1. When we had an apartment, we hung up the same ribbon in a doorway that led to the hallway with our bathroom and bedroom. I've always been able to find a place, but I know not all homes are set up that way with a doorway/entryway that doesn't have a door on it.

  15. Aww this is cool! We have this thing up all year round that uses close pins too, onto twine between two skinny boards.

    1. I would love to leave this up all year and replace the holiday cards with other snail mail we get, but my husband is not on board. Ha!

  16. This is very clever. Oops, I typed Cleaver...wth?

I had to look at your photo about three times before I realized I was looking into another room and that the opening wasn't a giant wooden framed mirror. Optical illusion for the win!

My friend gifted me a vintage something-or-other a few years ago that I use for my cards. Was it created for cards? I dunno, but I love it and should share it on my blog. Thanks for the insp.
