Five for Friday, Edition #25

Clematis, I think. It's bigger than my hand.

I have been sort of absent from Bloggyland lately and I am both sorry for this and unable to do much about it. Life has taken a turn and in six months, this will likely be behind me, but for now, things are insane in all aspects of my life. I shall post when I can and comment on your posts when I can, but I'm going to be the first to say that something had to go in my life, and, sadly, blogging was the easiest thing to let go.

But I'm here now and I have about half an hour before I need to walk the dog, so let's talk about all the great and wonderful.

1) Tomorrow I have a date with a blogging friend to go on a fun adventure. Yes, we will be doing all the time traveling and if I don't get to make my own handmade leather bracelet, I will be disappointed.

2) It's peony season! I mean, it's really just flower season, so I'm going to pepper this post with flower photos.

3) It is THAT TIME OF YEAR. First year orientation at my job. Last year I shared my playlist of music that we blast for the first years and I'm at it again. I have a new co-worker who was able to give me a handful of songs her teenage son listens to. I have asked the first years themselves to recommend songs.

(OKAY. I must have told this story on someone else's blog. It was! It was Nicole's post. But I'm going to tell it here anyway. We’re doing a software rollout for a software that doesn’t really work at work. But for reasons that escape me right now - this is a lie: I was practicing AVOIDANCE of the real problem - I was focused on getting different colored Post-It notes for an activity with our first years. We only had yellow ones in our office. I asked my husband if we could have some from his office (we work in the same college!!), but he said NO because it came out of his department’s budget. Well, I waited until a morning when no one was in his department and I STOLE FOUR PADS OF POST-ITS from his department. It was the best theft.

I bring up the great Post-It Theft of 2025 because we have an activity where the first years answer questions on Post-It notes and that's one of the questions I ask. Long tangent.)

Do you have a recommendation for me to add to the list? Relatively clean, snappy, fun?

4) My husband dislikes rock 'n' roll flutes. Think Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, or the kickass flute solo in California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas. As you can tell, I am on Team Rock Flute. What team are you on?

Not a flower. My adorable kitty in a window. Awwww...cute baby girl.

5) When you name duos, is there always a name that goes first? When people say my name with my husband's, they almost always say his name first because it sounds better. When people say my name with my sister's, they always say her name first because it sounds better. Does this come up in your life?

****************

I'll take recommendations for my playlist. Are you Team Rock Flute or not? (This post is absolutely nonsense, isn't it?)

Zelda is pretty as a flower - and those full bloomed flowers are fluffy like her.
For songs, APT by Rosé and Bruno Mars is fun. Older songs: Jump by Van Halen, shiny Happy People and The End of the World as We Know by REM, Closer to Fine by Indigo Girls .. oops no, that has lyrics that disparage college degrees. Twist and Shout by the Beatles, And She was by Talking Heads, Reach Out I'll Be Thee by the four tops, Good to Be alive by Andy Grammer. I don't mind a little rock flute, though I prefer rock horns ( Chicago).
My name comes before my husband but always after my sister's.
I have many post-it notes in multiple colors. They're fun to have, and some of my kids use them for studying. I csn see them being helpful in college orientation.
I'm sorry things are rough for you.bthank you for taking time to share the glorious flower pictures.

Sorry that I don't have more current music suggestions. I'm in a somewhat depressing country music phase, and I don't think Haunted, I'm the Problem , or I am not Okay fit the peppy mood!

    2. I am also in a depressing country music phase. Don't get me started on Jason Isbell! Why so much sadness, sir?!

  2. Hey, sometimes something's got to give, and we will all be here when you are! xo
I totally feel #5 and I try to switch it up sometimes, say the names in a different order and it always feels wrong. But you know what, I have no idea how people say my name. Is it Nicole and Rob? Or Rob and Nicole? I think I've heard it both ways but I DO NOT KNOW.
I like a flute just fine!
    Have fun with Anne!

    1. I have heard our names both ways, but it sounds wrong when my name is first! I suppose that's fair since I'm A LOT and usually am the person getting more attention, you know?

  3. I think it is usually “John and Sue” but “Amma and Buppa” (as in grandma and grandpa).

  4. Yep, I get it. Unless you do it for a living, blogging is a back burner item. However, for those of us who don't do it for a living, the nice thing is that blogging is always here for us, whether we post every day or once a year. I'm sending you internet hugs for the next six months.

Have fun with your bloggy friend tomorrow<3 I approve of the Great Post It Heist of 2025.

I just did a survey, and I can't think of any of our couple friends who have good duo names. Hubs and I have tried, and the only way that works is his name first.

    1. The Great Post-It Heist of 2025 will go down in infamy, you know?

It's interesting with our names because if my husband didn't go by his nickname, I think it sounds better when my name goes first. But with his nickname, it's definitely his name first.

    1. Shorter words go first!?!? Is this a rule? It does explain a lot about how I traditionally name duos...

  8. I am on Team Rock Flute. I love the peonies. So pretty. Never noticed a pattern about whose name goes first, but our first names are similar in length which means either can go first and sound good. Fascinating question.

    1. My SIL is obsessed with peonies and used them as her wedding flower. She's never been to visit us, but I bet she'd be super jealous of our town's peony garden.

  9. Oh goodness, I have noticed that one person’s name usually goes first, but never thought of why until I came to Maya and Ally’s comments about length. Interesting! We have some friends whose names are both very short, and their names sound good either way, so I guess it makes sense.

Beautiful flowers, YAY on the heist (are you in trouble now that the Dr. knows?), beautiful kitty, color me sad due to no Hannah picture in this post, Enjoy your FUN with Anne, and I hope things calm down for you, and that at least SOME of the busyness is good busyness.

Oh, and I guess I’m team rock flute, because I like Moody Blues.

    1. Oh, he knows about the heist. He was not happy, but I assured him that it was allowed. LOL.

I'm also going to tell him that most of you are Team Rock Flute because he's so grumpy about it.

  10. THE CLEMATIS!!!!! Gorgeous!

I have been thinking about the couple names, and I do agree that sometimes it seems like there's a Preferred Order. If I really dig into it, it's usually the person I know best who comes first, and then his/her spouse.

Six months. That is both a very long time to be Enduring Something and also a finite period, so I hope that it goes by at the exact right pace you need it to. xxoo

    1. It's interesting that it's who you know best/first that comes first. There might be something to do that in my world, too.

  11. I think a little Theft Between Departments is just fine. Tell Dr. BB to stop being so stodgy.

Peonies are almost done here, thanks to some blistering heat, downpours, and high winds recently (and, in true NEO fashion, all on the same day, pretty much). I love them, but Rick is allergic, so I have to enjoy them in other people's yards and, believe me, I do.

I love the flute anyplace. I may be prejudice because I played the flute for years and years. I am also a huge Moody Blues fan, so no one better diss the Moodys (Justin Hayward 4ever).

Couple names in our family are always sibling/family member first. If it is outside the family, then it's whoever in the couple we knew first. If we got to know them together, then it's usually the shorter name first. (I never, ever thought of this before!)

I hope everything settles out okay for you. Why can't life just be flowers, dogs, kitties, and cookies? I bet most of us would be good with that.

    1. It is interesting because when life is just flowers, dogs, kitties, and cookies, I often complain about how boring it is! I would love to have a boring life right now. Alas, we are where we are and this will also be a memory someday.

  12. I'm sorry to hear you are going through a rough stretch. Thinking of you!

I've been loving seeing all the peonies! That is my favorite flower and their season is so fleeting so I try to really appreciate them!

I feel like my name is only said with my husband and I think "Phil and Lisa" sounds better than "Lisa and Phil."

    1. Interesting! I don't think the double l in Phil and Lisa is as nice as Lisa (vowel) and Phil (soft consonant).

  13. As a former flute player (high school band) I am 100% team rock flute! Your post it note heist cracked me up! You wild woman! Your flower photos are lovely. I'm a fan of flower closeups. And kitty photos. I'm sorry life is taking a hard turn, and I'm sending you virtual hugs. Feedly will tell me when you post, so I'll be here when you feel up to posting.

I dig a good flute, and yes, we have a couple of Jethro Tull albums. Our nickname is Team MarTar, never Team TarMar. That would just be wrong.

    1. TarMar sounds suspiciously close to tartar. I can see why you don't go that way.

  15. I am sorry to hear life is tough right now. Hope things are looking up rather sooner than later.

I am no help with songs for your list. I don't like any of the new ones. Not that I know which ones these are.

Your flowers are amazing. I love peonies.

    1. I don't like most new songs, either. Ha! That's part of the problem. People suggest new songs, I listen to them, but don't like them, so I don't add them. LOL.

  16. Sending hugs. It has been a rough stretch and I know the light at the end of the tunnel is bittersweet.

YES! I always have an order and I think it usually has to do with the length of the first name. A shorter name always sounds "better" to me, going first. (Not always though; in some cases, I put the name of the person I know better first because that's what comes naturally.)

    1. I am fascinated by the shorter name going first situation. Does that apply to your kids or do you do birth order when you name them? It's so interesting!
