Saturday, October 17 - Forty-six minutes this morning, but most of that was Hannah and I trying to do two blocks after she got scared because of the damn duck hunters and their shots. She gets scared and pulls really hard, so when she does that, I turn her around and we go back and forth in circles until she stops pulling. I know it sounds really mean to do training when she's scared like that, but she's going to hurt herself (or me) someday when she yanks. We went for a much more relaxing 20 minute walk with Dr. BB after lunch.
Dr. BB and I went to a corn maze later that night (doing a corn maze at night is an experience you should all experience at least once in your lifetime) and then Hannah and I went out for another ten minutes before bed.

Sunday, October 18 - Forty-one minutes this morning, mainly playing around off leash. We did 15 minutes in the afternoon, but Hannah did her business and wanted to head inside, so I didn't force her outside longer. Truth be told, at least a third of that afternoon "walk" was just Hannah laying down chewing on a stick, so maybe I shouldn't even record it here.
Check out this late season dahlia (?), holding out even after an overnight frost. Flower experts, correct me if I'm wrong on the flower name.
Monday, October 19 - Forty minutes this morning. It was dark, the leaves were rustling, and someone was not as brave as she has been in the past. We did another 35 minutes after work and ten minutes around the block before bed.
Tuesday, October 20 - Forty minutes this morning, 30 minutes after work, and 13 minutes to get around the block tonight. Why did it take us so long to get around the block, you ask? If both of us are focused, we can do that walk in seven minutes. It takes twice as long if someone stops to stare at every single person who walks by, gets in or out of their car, or makes a pizza delivery. Woe unto any delivery person on our street.
Wednesday, October 21 - Half an hour this morning. I left work early today to get home to take Hannah for an extra long walk because it was in the 60s and I don't know how many more of these days we're going to get. Unfortunately, for me, Hannah mostly wanted to chew sticks and roll around in the grass on that "walk." We did a twenty minute walk before bed, too.

| Can you see Hannah? Do you love how unbothered she is by this giant inflatable? |
Thursday, October 22 - We did 45 minutes this morning, a half hour after work, and a ten minute meander around the block before bed. I know you're all dying for a weather update: It was in the 40s this morning, in the 70s this afternoon, and in the 50s before bed. It was sunny today. Yes, we are regularly doing 30 degree shifts in temps over the day and I have to admit that my bad leg is NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT.

Are there any late blooming flowers near you? Did I identify that flower correctly?

Our ‘rental’ dog gets a couple of walks including on around 9 or 10. But he still got wife up at 4 this morning.
ReplyDeleteOof. Four is early. Hannah is pretty flexible about her walking and waking times. The cat, though, she's loud.
DeleteI do love how unbothered she is by the inflatable!
ReplyDeleteI think I would love my walks being punctuated by a dog chewing sticks... or maybe not, now that I think of it. I remember sometimes JUST WANTING TO GET TO THE PLACE WE WERE GOING with toddlers and it took the whole dang day because they stopped to look at everything. Which is ultimately precious and now I'd have the patience for it because it doesn't happen in my life anymore, but at the time sometimes felt truly exhausting.
Yep. Dogs are basically stuck at the toddler stage. If I have forty-five minutes to meander and let her sniff endlessly, I'm happy to do so. But sometimes I have to leave the house in twenty minutes, so I need her to DO THE THING and she's all puttering around and I can get frustrated. I try REALLY HARD not to lose my patience because her life is short and she's inside most of the time and we are her whole world, blah, blah, blah. It's all TRUE, of course, but sometimes I have places to go.
DeleteUgh, I can't imagine how Doggo would react to the duck hunters except for not well. Our big walking adventure of the week was yesterday when I took her to a park with a river and walked to the shore so that she could splash around in the water, which is her greatest joy in life. Well, it was muddy so as soon as we got home all of my clothes went into the wash and both of us went into the tub. It was great fun.
ReplyDeleteYES!! I like that Doggo likes water. What a true dog spirit. I also like that Hannah does not like water because then I have a lot less of a mess on most outings!
Deletethis has been the BEST October weather
ReplyDeleteYes, it has really been great, especially compared to the neverending rain of September.
DeleteI don't blame Hannah one bit for being afraid of the duck hunters! I would be afraid of them. Sounds like 9other than all the many many scary things) Hannah is enjoying her walks immensely. Stick chewing! Rolling on the ground! She's living her best life.
ReplyDeleteShe IS living her best life. I get asked a lot if she's still a puppy and I credit it to the fact that she's always rolling around in the grass. People don't expect that of full grown dogs!
DeleteI think that's a Dahlia! We had such a warm September that plenty of flowers kept blooming, and I welcomed every one of them. My Galway bay climbing rose kept going longer than usual. Now the cold weather came on very quickly this week and after a storm last night, we're awaiting the second storm of the season over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteLike...a snow storm? Already? I would be LIVID!!!
DeleteNo, just a regular Atlantic storm with strong winds and heavy rain. That's the typical storm we get here. Snow storms are very rare here, the last time we got one was in 2018.
DeleteIt looks like a Dahlia to me! My Husband has dahlias in our garden and a few are still going strong.
ReplyDeleteLast year I did flowers as a theme one week for CBWC and I was aurprised how many flowers I still saw in yards and gardens.
It’s so interesting that giant inflatables don’t phase Hannah. And that one is HUGE!!!
I mean, the inflatables *rarely* phase Hannah. Occasionally one will get her (and me). But honestly it's mostly the stupid random things in trees that get us.
DeleteThere are a lot of flowers still around. I'm surprised by it. It has been a warm fall, so maybe more are hanging on than usual?
I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that is a Dahlia. I bought 3 pots of them this year and I still had one hanging around until a couple of weeks ago. Vancouver is breaking records for the least amount of rainfall this month since 1907. It's been great for walking this month. We have several inflatables around the neighbourhood this year. Makes the evening walks fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually a bit of a curmudgeon about inflatables. Mostly because about half the time they are deflated and then they look terrible! But I do think they can be fun when they're actually up and working correctly.
DeleteI love those colors and Halloween decorations! I agree with all of the above that its a Dahlia, although I am not an expert by far!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I used Google Lens, so I didn't want to make a claim I couldn't really back up.
DeleteI don’t think it’s cruel at all to train Hannah when she’s freaked out. It seems like it calms her and recenters her, which is exactly what she needs right then.
ReplyDeleteYou took some beautiful pictures! Dahlias do tend to blossom late, until the first freeze I think. When I was in Ohio last week, I saw a tree with a few blossoms on it, which seemed really weird to me. Maybe it was dead and they were there from spring?
Yeah, I don't know if Hannah thinks it's a good thing when she hears shots and I won't let her drag me home!
DeleteTraining while on a walk sounds like the perfect time. I've been dragged by Zydrunas twice, and it was not only scary but painful. And yes, it did take me TWICE before I learned not to be the one to take Z out.
ReplyDeleteThere is a dahlia farm on our way to the lake, and it's still in full bloom--so many beautiful colours! That is definitely a dahlia. The arrangement and shape of their petals is so perfect, so symmetrical.
You've got some very scenic walking turf up there. Hannah is lucky.
Hannah feels like she's being punished by having to walk so much, but she IS lucky, isn't she?
DeleteWow. I guess flowers have farms, but I haven't thought much about it. I bet it's beautiful!
I would've identified the flower as "yellow," so you're one up on me.
ReplyDeleteI wish we'd settle on one season per day. This autumn in the morning, summer in the afternoon stuff is bugging me. Looking ahead, 70 next Wednesday and 50 on Thursday? Is there any end to this whiplash??
