A Day in the Life, 2/11/2026

5:30am - The alarm went off. I read for about twenty minutes under my SAD lamp. I'm reading In Memoriam by Alice Winn and, based on the title, I hope you all understand that it's not a happy read.

6:24am - Hannah and I are out for a walk by the river. It's amazing how warm 25F/-4C feels when there's no wind.

6:29am - Still on our walk. New billboard up for my college!

I get home, charge Hannah's LED collar, feed her, and feed myself.

7:26am - Getting dressed and putting on makeup.

7:52am - On my way to work. I took this photo just to show everyone what my commute can look like. When people say things like "just go to Barnes and Noble/TJ Maxx/whatever else store" I giggle because I live in a place where farm equipment is a daily part of my life.

Got to work and started working. That was checking emails and following up on some loose ends from yesterday. I chatted with my boss for a few minutes about how the degree audit software is going, talked with my co-worker about repotting plants, and then remembered that I should probably actually water my plants.

8:54am - The plants were watered.

9:05am - We're working on revamping all of our marketing materials for our departments. One of our chairs said theirs was finished, but I disagree. I printed it out and I'm going to take it up to her office to talk it over with her.

10:38am - I just spent the rest of the morning working and drinking tea.

12:14pm - Doing a short yoga video before I did my virtual stretch class

12:51pm - Now I need to eat lunch.

Then I worked all afternoon. Imagine me sending emails and calling people.

4:24pm - Home and picking up packages off the porch. One is a probiotic for the cat (I can only find it on Amazon and when I order directly from the company, they charge me $5 more and ship it through Amazon anyway, so I have a subscribe and save for it, but don't shoot me for using Amazon) and new sheets!

4:32pm - Sat down to read a chapter of my CBBC book. We're traveling this weekend and I literally have no idea when I'm actually going to have time to write that post, so I'm trying to at least read the chapters early.

5:19pm - Dr. BB wanted me to edit a letter he was writing, so I did that and as soon as I wasn't writing or holding a book, this happened.

I look disconcertingly like my sister here. Boo.

5:48pm - Cooking dinner.

6:20pm - While the frittata is in the oven, I feed Hannah.

6:43pm - If anyone ever wonders what I see while I'm eating at the table, it's this.

6:55pm - After dinner, I write a birthday card to my friend Nick (HI NICK - he doesn't read this blog).
Card from this Etsy seller

I then sat on the couch and watched ice dancing for two hours. Could I have worked out? Yes. Could I have finished my CBBC chapters? Yes. Could I have cleaned the bathroom and washed the sheets? Yes. But I didn't. The Olympics don't happen every day.

9:07pm - Hannah and I went for a half hour walk.

Then I got ready for bed, put the finishing touches on this post, and am going to head up to bed. That's a wrap.

Did you watch the Olympics yesterday? What time did your alarm go off?

No alarm needed here- my cats are good about waking me up for treats if I sleep past 5am. No Olympics here- I don't watch much of anything.
That morning commute is a familiar sight for me. Living in a rural area makes Amazon a necessity. There's no comparison shopping locally, let alone the academic books, car and appliance parts, or weird tools my husband buys. I do buy the occasional hard copy book in the local independent book store ( and they have hand made greeting cards too!) So we use Amazon for mostly non-book stuff.

    1. My girls are always solidly asleep still by the time we stumble downstairs. They are NOT good alarm clocks and I'm grateful for that because it means we can sleep in when we can sleep in!

I don't know if Amazon is a necessity for us. I placed nine orders with them in 2025 and four were probiotics, one was dog treats my aunt couldn't source locally, and the other four were gifts. If I were more on the ball with starting gift buying earlier, I could probably only order the probiotics. It's something I need to think about!

  2. I didn’t watch the O’s yesterday but may or may both catch some hockey today. Re winter walks, I agree that it is the wind and not the cold that is the killer.

    1. The wind makes everything worse. We always joke and say "thanks Canada" when it's cold air coming from the north. But, as is well documented on this blog, I don't understand how wind works. LOL.

  3. Oooh that last photo of you is beautiful!!! Well, all the photos are but I really like that one. I am so nosy, I love these posts so much. I like to see what everyone's doing. When my kids were little they watched Phineas and Ferb, and there is a character on that show called Isabella, and her catchphrase is "Whatcha doing?" and I always feel like that. This will mean nothing to you as I am sure you've never watched it but WHATCHA DOING is kind of how I feel while reading this. I hope you're travelling for a good/ fun reason this weekend. xo

    2. I feel like I need to watch P&F now. I missed this show entirely. I am super nosy, too, so Isabella sounds like someone I should know.

  4. LIke Nicole, I'm nosy! I love posts like this so, so much, and I'm paying alarmingly close attention (wait, what time did she get up? How long did it take her to make dinner?) The details of people's lives are fascinating!!!
I was actually relieved to see that Amazon package- I've cut way down on my amazon purchases but still do use them for some things. Sigh. And- the Olympics only happen for two weeks EVERY FOUR YEARS, so you're completely justified in watching as much as possible. I have it on every night, and will have it on all weekend.

    1. It takes me about 30 minutes to prep the frittata and 15 minutes to bake it! Just in case you still felt like that wasn't enough details above.

I feel like we're going to be watching Olympics for the next two months because I really only have 1-2 hours a day when I can watch it. Sad news. But we can keep Peacock for a couple of months.

  5. I LOVE reading posts like this. I find them daunting to do myself and it has been a YEAR (a YEAR) since a did a Day in a Life, but I would happily read one of these posts every single day. So fun.
I don't set an alarm very often because my kids wake me up if I'm still asleep when it's time to get going for school. I hate mornings so much.
I watch at least a little bit of the Olympics each day. Because of the time difference, I am often watching replays in the evening, so I'll sometimes skip to the parts I want to watch (for example, I watched Ice Dance after the fact, so just watched the top four pairs programs).
It is a second consecutive snow day for my kids, so I'm home with them and have women's hockey on in the background right now, but I don't typically watch Olympics live/during the day if the kids are at school.

    1. That's TOO MUCH SNOW, Elisabeth. You should go on strike. Refuse to get out of bed until the snow is done!

  6. I neglected both physical books I am reading and watched the Olympics yesterday too. I haven’t even started my CBBC chapters for this week yet. Amazon…boo. I had to buy something from them recently that I couldn’t get elsewhere, so I signed up for Prime for a month in order to avoid shipping. Now I need to remember to cancel, but I’m waiting just in case there is something else I should buy real quick…I have a few days yet. My point is, NO JUDGEMENT.

I love that birthday card, thank you for the link, I may want to get one…gosh, cards are expensive these days, aren’t they?

    1. Cards are expensive, but at least I know that I'm supporting a small business/artist and the person who receives the card will enjoy it (however briefly) so it's at least a better way of spending money than MANY other things I buy, you know? I can always justify spending money on cards and gifts. It's my own personal vice.

This is a great thing. The cards are cheap given the time and materials an artist spends on them.

  7. That little Hannah-bun just got me. Is there anything more cozy than a pet all curled up near/on you? No. No there is not.

No judgment here about Amazon. I have to use them for Piper's L-Lysine supplements. No pet store here carries them anymore, despite my requests and urgings. I think we all do what we can when it comes to Shopping With A Conscience And Intention.

The day I retired, I took all clocks out of the bedroom. If I need to set an alarm for any reason, I use my phone, and that is rare. I heartily wish all of you could enjoy this luxury; I truly, truly do.

    1. Hannah is always nears us. She doesn't like to be touched much, but she wants to be by us and that hard-earned trust is never taken for granted in our house.

Oh, wow. We each have a clock on our side of the bed. I love the idea that when (if?) we retire, we can just take the clocks away!

  8. I am definitely watching all the Olympics while I can! Back when I was full time in the office, before the pandemic, I would get up at 5:50am to get the kids ready, drop off at daycare, and be at the office by 7:30. These days I have a much more relaxed working from home schedule, and I get up at 7 during the week to get the middle schooler ready for her bus. Interested in your thoughts on In Memoriam, it was a DNF for me but that might have just been because it was on audio and I wasn't connecting.

    1. In memoriam is UNBEARABLY SAD. I'm glad I'm only reading it for short bits and bursts. I mean, I guess I don't know what I was expecting from the title, but it wasn't this. *heavy sigh* Not great mid-winter reading for those of us with SAD.

  9. Yay for DITL! Also yay for balmy 20 degree dog walks and for kitty snuggles.

Hubs is a softer touch at mealtimes than I am, so when we're at the table Doggo stays glued on him. Usually she is in a "good girl sit" staring adoringly at him, but if he goes too long without acknowledging her, she gives him a nose boop to remind him.

    1. Ha. No one is a soft touch in our house. Hannah doesn't get fed people food. But she is a pack animal and likes to be with her pack. And I like her to be with us!

Codex: I am intensely private and treat others the same. No nosey Ness here. However I find these posts enjoyable and informative.
    1. When I was looking into reorganizing I get ideas and see how it might work in a space. Had I not seen it a library trolley for current projects would have never occurred to me. What do you use the sheet music stand for?

    2. Your workday is enviable and humane. Reading before work? (I'd never get out).
    3. When it's my turn I put in the laundry, cook or clean. So I can just relax after. Works well.
Thanks for giving us a glimpse.

    1. The music stand is for...sheet music. My husband plays guitar, so there are guitars and music stands in several strategic spots in our house so it's easy for him to take an instrument our and practice whenever he has a few spare moments.

Codex: I was looking for an alternative to a big easel in the living room. But music stands are too flimsy. It looks nice though.

  11. DITL! I love these little slices of someone's day! I used to get up super early as well, but lately I have been changing it up! I love that you get up and read; I think that is an excellent way to start the day. I was in the habit of doing that when I was in Bulgaria; it was lovely. I would get up, read, go for a hike, then do my admin (computer) stuff later in the day and I just felt like I was starting my day off right. Then I started traveling faster, and my routine went to pot. Last night I could not sleep and so I read for a while, searched the internet for campervans for no reason, listened to three podcasts (at least) and finally fell asleep around...woof, maybe 3 am (?) so I did not get up until around 7:30 am.

    1. If I didn't have the structure of work, I don't know if I'd ever get out of bed before 7:30am. I am chronically underslept! I would like to get 8-9 hours a night and have a nap in the day. That would be ideal. Maybe someday!

    1. It is sort of hard when I'm at work a great deal of the day and all I'm doing is work on the computer. Neither my computer screen nor office is that interesting. Oh, well. There are other interesting parts of the day, right?

  13. Engie, We've been so brainwashed that 25 feels warm...

If you hadn't documented feeding Hannah, people would be calling ASPCA about how hungry she seemed to be while you were presumably stuffing your face. Haha.

I actually love that pic of you and Zelda!

    1. I mean, 25 is warm in my winter coat, heated vest, and boots! It's all in your perspective.

I love that there are photos of me and Zelda that show how we spend most of our time together (cuddling on the couch), but I don't always love the strong family resemblance. I'd love to pretend I'm adopted sometimes!

  14. I maybe HAVE seen a big dog circle-curled like that like Lucy does, but I don't REMEMBER, and it is adorable and I'm so happy to see it. I am so happy you watched the Olympics instead of doing other stuff you could have. I love the Platypus card. I love your leggings and stripy socks pic. You look NOTHING like your sister in that pic (I know, don't care, don't @ me). My friend was leaving my house last night and she checked the weather and said "It's only -10, (14F) feels like -16. Practically a heat wave).

  15. Also, maybe just push the book club post for a week! I know I know, lol.

  16. I would rather occasionally be stuck behind farm equipment than have a Barnes & Noble or TJ Maxx on every corner. That's what Janesville is for, amirite?!

I've watched a little bit of the Olympics here and there. Back when I lived in Washington, my boss put the Winter Olympics on TV and let us all watch while we worked for the full two weeks. It occurs to me that I could just as easily do that here, when working from home. 'Scuse me while I go turn on the TV!

And my alarm went off at 5 a.m. My only consolation? There will be no alarm tomorrow morning.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love that you begin your day with reading. My alarm goes off at 5 am, but I only stay for a meditation and then have to get going (workout) to make it to the office on time.

I have not watched a ton of the Olympics for the reason that my work day is very long and I usually kinda collapse on the couch after dinner. LOL I know I should at least turn on the TV. What did I miss?
